TED Talk: Elaine Lui – The Sociology of Gossip

Such a cool talk!
Lainey isn’t looking to impress anyone, especially celebrities. The ETALK Reporter and scribe of the immensely popular celebrity gossip blog, LaineyGossip.com, does what she does for one reason – to provide a gossip education to the Canadian public. The Toronto-born, self-proclaimed gossip maven got into the gossip game in a very roundabout way. What started as an email to two friends grew to a website with active followers from around the world. More than one million people now read LaineyGossip.com every month, making it a leading international celebrity news source. Elaine’s years of experience in the media, celebrity entertainment and blogging space have helped her shape a fascinating TED talk about gossip and it’s critical place within modern pop culture.

TED Talk: Cameron Russell – Looks aren’t everything. Believe me, I’m a model

Cameron Russell admits she won “a genetic lottery”: she’s tall, pretty and an underwear model. But don’t judge her by her looks. In this fearless talk, she takes a wry look at the industry that had her looking highly seductive at barely 16-years-old.
Filmed at TEDxMidAtlantic.

TED Talk: Angela Patton – A father-daughter dance … in prison

You need to watch this.
This talk made me cry and cry and cry, because I was moved. Such a great idea! I love that the chief of the prison went along with this – and I love his argument even more: “That men, who have close relations with their children, are less likely to come back”.
At Camp Diva, Angela Patton works to help girls and fathers stay connected and in each others’ lives. But what about girls whose fathers can’t be there — because they’re in jail? Patton tells the story of a very special father-daughter dance.
I saw the link a couple of days ago on Twitter. But didn’t have time to watch it then. And now I can’t remember, who posted it. So if you believe, you’re the one to credit, please let me know, and I will
Oi: Magical Pay Phone

Oi, a telecom provider from Brazil, is hoping to make everyone believe in the magic of Christmas one more time. That’s why they created the Magical Pay Phone, a device that connected kids with Santa Claus.
Installed in Rio de Janeiro, the special pay phone was available to kids walking by with their parents. Once they made the call, the kids would chat with Santa. But it was much more than a telephone call. Big surprises were prepared for the kids: lost elves, gifts and even a mapped projection with snow and a choir of kids. Everything to make a great experience for the children and everyone watching.

TED Talk: Jerry Michalski – ‘What if we trusted you?’ at TEDxCopenhagen 2012

“Many institutions we take for granted are designed from a basis of mistrust. Skip school too often? Go to jail. Run that red light, even when nobody is around for blocks? Ticket.”
In September I went to TEDxCopenhagen 2012. This is Jerry Michalski’s talk from this very inspiring day.

TED Talk: Lisa Kristine – Photos that bear witness to modern slavery

This is a really important talk from TEDxMaui. A must-see!
It moved me for days …
For the past two years, photographer Lisa Kristine has traveled the world, documenting the unbearably harsh realities of modern-day slavery. She shares hauntingly beautiful images – miners in the Congo, brick layers in Nepal – illuminating the plight of the 27 million souls enslaved worldwide.
