Sculptures by Brad Downey

These pieces are created by Brad Downey, a visual artist adorning public streets with his sculptural installations. Strongly influenced by Duchamp, Downey’s approach relies on imminence visual communication and is playing against our everyday outlooks. From Dadaism to minimalism, he is a bright example of a modernist sculptor, whose works dive deep into the anarchy of the 21st-century globalized cities.

Friskis&Svettis: #friskissthlm

In January all gyms and health clubs advertise to catch everyone who made the classic New Year’s resolution – start excercising. Friskis&Svettis is no exception. Their mission was to create a campaign on behalf of 16 branches of Friskis&Svettis in Stockholm, to get more people to discover the various forms of exercise at Friskis&Svettis. Friskis&Svettis is a non-profit association, owned by the members. They know their gym better than anyone. So why not let the members be the campaign and inspire others to join the community? They created the hashtag #friskissthlm on Instagram and called on the members to work out, photograph and tag their pics and by doing so; become a part of the campaign around Stockholm.

3: The WiFi Ad

When the Swedish mobile operator 3 wanted to promote their “Pocket WiFi”, a portable WiFi router, they used an unexpected media channel – WiFiIn the Stockholm Central Station they set up a WiFi hotspot and made it public. Then they named it ”Looking for WiFi?” and when people connected to the network they were redirected to a web page where the local 3 Store asked if it was not about time getting your own WiFi.
Simple, and effective.

Un-instrusive Pop Up Street Furniture of the Netherlands

Street art and furniture in public places tends to be the last thing on the minds of public planners. Many artists have been branching out into more creative and innovative ways of putting inviting and interesting designs for the general public. Carmela Bogman and Rogier Martin of The Netherlands have come up with an interactive design for the people.
By utilizing a hydraulic system, users can determine which pieces to bring up and determine their own seated or standing heights to set the modular blocks at. There are three retractable pieces that come up to function as a lounge area, eating spot or meeting place – or just lower them all down to be flush with the cement to keep the flow of traffic moving.

Anonymous Singing by Yuki Uebo

“Can you sing in a public?” is created by Yuki Uebo.
In order to enable to sing in a public space the best solution is to hide a face so you become anonymous person. Partially allowing the participant to reveal the their arm would give him / her an opportunity to play a tambourine with singing.

21 Musical Light Swings on the Streets of Montreal

When I first saw the photos from this lovely installation in Montreal I smiled. I absolutely love, when a city allows artists to put up installations that makes the citizens use the their city. But the I saw the video!
It made me love this installation even more!
21 Balançoires (21 Swings) is a recent project by Canadian design collective Daily Tous Les Jours, known for their wide variety of interactive public installations and experiences. Surrounded on both sides by a new music complex and science center, designers Mouna Andraos and Melissa Mongiat chose to bridge the gap between the two by converting a narrow strip of land into an enormous interactive instrument.
Pre-recorded sounds from a xylophone, piano, and other instruments were programmed into color-coded swings that when in use play various notes, however when swung in unison with careful cooperation, more complex melodies and harmonies arise. An additional “secret mode” was programmed to only play when all 21 swings were in use.

Gravity-Defying Land Art by Cornelia Konrads

German artist Cornelia Konrads creates mind-bending site-specific installations in public spaces, sculpture parks and private gardens around the world. Her work is frequently punctuated by the illusion of weightlessness, where stacked objects like logs, fences, and doorways appear to be suspended in mid-air, reinforcing their temporary nature as if the installation is beginning to dissolve before your very eyes.

Library Pay Phone Booth in New York City by John Locke

I absolutely love this project!
The need for pay phones continues to diminish. New York-based architect John Locke had an idea that would help make your standard pay phone booth a bit more practical and multi functional.
As part of the Locke’s ‘Department of Urban Betterment’ interventionist project, the architect has transformed New York City pay phones into mini libraries for public use. Locke attached a vibrant orange shelf to the pay phone, and the mini library was formed. The shelving unit is constructed of plywood milled by Kontraptionist. Named the ‘Dub 002′ this mini library is being stocked with books donated by local New York residents.
