Portraits Drawn with Tea, Vodka, Whiskey and Ink by Carne Griffiths

UK-based illustrator Carne Griffiths creates these striking portraits with uncommon mediums such as tea, brandy, vodka, whiskey, graphite and calligraphy ink. His drawings most frequently explore human and floral forms, as says he’s “fascinated by the flow of line and the ‘invisible lines’ that connect us to the natural world.” The four pieces above are part of a limited edition postcard set just released by Griffiths, each of which comes in a fancy custom-illustrated, wax-sealed envelope. He also has a solo show at Ink-d Gallery in Brighton that closes this Saturday.

Yap art by Danish Kristina Gordon

These paintings make me smile!
Kristina Gordon is an illustrator and graphic designer from Copenhagen, Denmark. She’s created this wonderful universe with creatures from, what she calls, the Yap Forest.
“It’s full of all sorts of creatures, from the always happy Yap, a happy go lucky sorta fella who is full of energy and friendly happiness, to his best friend Pusmis, who is always pulling pranks but is good hearted underneath. There are many more characters and some are a bit more sinister”, Kristina Gordon says.
Kristina makes print and paintings. Check her out on Facebook too.

Quotes on wood – by Mitch Hedberg and Kiersten Essenpreis

“When Gallery 1988 asked me if I’d like to participate in their second installment of Is This Thing On?, I jumped at the chance. Last year I depicted the great Steve Martin, but this year I decided to take on my other favorite comic, the late Mitch Hedberg.
I was first introduced to Mitch’s stand-up years back, by my roommate who used to play his recordings while we worked in the studio. I was instantly in love. His wit, play with language, and absurd observations paired with an odd, but enduring delivery made for a great comic who continues to be missed.
I once read that Mitch suffered from almost paralyzing stage fright and often wore sunglasses while on stage, so he could close his eyes while speaking. I thought about this a lot while sketching up ideas for my piece, and decided that a straight-forward portrait of Mitch would not suit him. To me, his words are really what he’d most likely prefer to be remembered for, so I tested out a new technique and created 8 small, wood etchings of my favorite quotes. All wood panels are sealed in resin”, Kiersten Essenpreis says.
Kiersten Essenpries grew up in the suburbs of Chicago but later moved to Brooklyn, NY to study at Pratt Institute. There she received a BFA in Communication Design with a minor in Art History. After 11 years in Brooklyn, she has recently relocated back to Chicago, where she continues to work as a freelance illustrator & gallery artist.
