Barncancerfonden: A hair-raising message

Barncancerfonden - A hair-raisin message 1 Barncancerfonden - A hair-raisin message 2 Barncancerfonden - A hair-raisin message 3

You probably remember when the Swedish Farmacy made this ad that blew you away on a train station in Stockholm?

The Swedish Children Cancer Association made a copy of this. But the message is much stronger here.

The Longest Way by Christoph Rehage

The Longest Way by Christoph Rehage 1 The Longest Way by Christoph Rehage 2 The Longest Way by Christoph Rehage 3 The Longest Way by Christoph Rehage 4

This video by  is actually 4 years old.

Christoph writes: “In 2008, I walked through China – one year, more than 4500km. All the while, I let my hair and my beard grow. This is the resulting video.

I never finished my original goal of walking to Germany. Instead, I walked for a year and roughly 4500km, passed the Gobi desert, and then decided to stop walking for now.

All of the distance from Beijing to Ürümqi was completed solely on foot, straight good old walking. There are instances where you can see me in the video sitting on a plane or riding a boat, but those are during breaks I had to take from walking, either to sort out bureaucracy issues or to take care of some personal things.

I had been planning this trip for over a year before I even started, and getting as far as I got was an experience for which I am very grateful.

Obtaining the necessary visa for a trip like this was not very easy, hence I had to go back to Beijing a few times to resolve some issues.

This is not a strict “1 pic a day” video, because I wanted to make it a bit more alive by adding some additional movement. Sometimes during the film you would follow me turn around, or something would happen in the background. I tried to capture these moments to make the video more interesting.”

You can check out his blog here: thelongestway.com

Big thanks to my friend Lis for finding this.

Endia Beal’s Portraits Of White Women With Black Hairstyles: Can I Touch It?

Endia Beal’s Portraits Of White Women With Black Hairstyles 1 Endia Beal’s Portraits Of White Women With Black Hairstyles 2 Endia Beal’s Portraits Of White Women With Black Hairstyles 3 Endia Beal’s Portraits Of White Women With Black Hairstyles 4 Endia Beal’s Portraits Of White Women With Black Hairstyles 5 Endia Beal’s Portraits Of White Women With Black Hairstyles 6 Endia Beal’s Portraits Of White Women With Black Hairstyles 7

Photographer Endia Beal has created corporate-style portraits of white women with hairstyles often worn by black women for her series, “Can I Touch It?”. Beal was first inspired to do this project after interning in the IT department at Yale while she was there earning her M.F.A. At the time, Beal, who is tall and black, was sporting a large red afro. She stood out among her mostly shorter, white male colleagues, and one even mentioned to her that a rumor was circulating around the office that the men were curious about her hair and wanted to touch it. She eventually asked some of her male colleagues to touch her hair, and even pull it. A week later, she recorded their reactions. She wanted the men to experience something new, and they were admittedly uncomfortable.

She next sought out middle-aged women who work in the corporate world for “Can I Touch It?”. ”I wanted people that had a certain idea of what you’re supposed to look like in the workspace, because it would be a challenge for them to understand what I experienced in that space…And to a degree, many young white women have shared that experience, but for older white women it’s an experience they haven’t necessarily had.”

“I said, ‘I am going to give you a black hairstyle,’ and they were like, ‘You’re going to give me cornrows?’ ” Beal recalls. “And I said, ‘No, we’re going to do finger waves.’ ‘Finger waves? What’s that? You mean from the ’20s?’ And I said, ‘These are a little bit different type of finger waves!’ ”

She says the women were excited to learn something new and to show off their hairstyles. Through this project, Beal hopes to start a conversation among people who come from various gender, race, and generational backgrounds, especially within the rigidity of a corporate environment. She is currently in North Carolina continuing this project, and is considering having the women enter and work at their offices with these new styles, after which she would record their experiences.

Fuzz Wax Bar: Street Waxing

Fuzz Wax Bar - Street Waxing 1 Fuzz Wax Bar - Street Waxing 2

The Fuzz Wax Bar team worked with Lowe Roche to show weekend festivalgoers that waxing is worth it. Onlookers were invited to tear a wax-strips doubling as coupons from a male model covered quite literally from head to toe. As more and more people pulled wax-strips from his body, he was left hairless — and completely ‘exposed’ — in the Toronto streets.

V by Ingrid Berthon-Moine

Ingrid Berthon-Moine is a French artist currently living and working in London. Her practice employs a variety of media including video, photography, sculpture and text to examine themes relating to gender, technology and personal biography. Her work investigates sexuality and the human body as vehicles for questioning new forms of sexual representation, challenging conventions by merging opposing visual signifiers in order to highlight absurdities and collapse cultural preconceptions.

‘V’ is a set of 15 photographs of men’s (hairy) chests, all with v-neck or open shirts, which through their framing are suggestive of the female pubis. This merging of opposing signifiers collapses preconceptions and amounts to a funny and brutal attack on prejudice.

Check out Ingrid’s awesome series about Greek Marbles too.
