Internet Explorer: Child of the 90s – Generation Y

If you grew up in the nineties as a kid, you will love this video. It is nostalgic and shows every trend you had as a kid back then. The commercial ends with “Your future was bright, you grew up. So did we”.

Futuristic highways in the Netherlands glow in the dark

A futuristic highway that can save energy and improve road safety is set to be installed in the Netherlands by mid-2013. The highway includes: glow-in-the-dark road markings painted with photo-luminescent paint which are charged during the day and light up during the night; temperature-responsive paint which indicates slippery roads when temperatures fall below zero; and interactive lights along the highway that light up as cars approach.
Wind lights that light up using the draft produced by cars and priority induction lanes that can recharge electric cars as they run along them also feature. The luminous road markings and weather indicating roads will debut in the Dutch province of Brabant.

TED Talk: Johanna Blakley – Social Media and the End of Gender

I love the TED app. I’m not really good at reading books. I’m not fond of the format. But I love watching talks. I learn something. And in a form, that suits me.
Before going on vacation, I went to my TED app, and downloaded a bunch of talks to my device for offline view. Such an awesome feature!
During my vacation, this was one of the talks that I watched.
“Media and advertising companies still use the same old demographics to understand audiences, but they’re becoming increasingly harder to track online, says media researcher Johanna Blakley. As social media outgrows traditional media, and women users outnumber men, Blakley explains what changes are in store for the future of media.”
These a a couple of interesting quotes from her talk:
- “When you look online on the way that people aggregate, they don’t aggregate around age, gender and income. They aggregate about the things they love and like. Shared interests and values are a far more powerful aggregator of human beings than demographic categories. I’d much rather know if you like ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, than how old you are. That will tell me something more substantial about you.”
- “Entertainment and play have a huge impact on people’s lives. On their political beliefs and their health. If you have any interest in understanding the world, looking at how people amuse themselves is a really good way to start.”
