The very old drawings of Japanese men farting are not photoshopped!

The images were produced during the Japanese Edo period (1603 – 1868), and they depcit what is called “hegassen” - or “farting competition.”

They show men shooting noxious blasts of gas towards other men, women, and animals. Seemingly, the force of the farts is so great that it the targets turn topsy-turvy when hit.

You can read about the historical context at Naruhodo, who says that “similar drawings were used to ridicule westerners towards the end of the Edo period, with images depicting the westerners blown away by Japanese farts.”

If you read Japanese, then find out more here.

Emptyland by Jaume Montserrat

EMPTYLAND BY JAUME MONTSERRAT 1 EMPTYLAND BY JAUME MONTSERRAT 2 EMPTYLAND BY JAUME MONTSERRAT 3 EMPTYLAND BY JAUME MONTSERRAT 4 EMPTYLAND BY JAUME MONTSERRAT 5 EMPTYLAND BY JAUME MONTSERRAT 6 EMPTYLAND BY JAUME MONTSERRAT 7 EMPTYLAND BY JAUME MONTSERRAT 8 EMPTYLAND BY JAUME MONTSERRAT 9

Such beautiful illustrations. These are created by the Barcelona-based illustrator Jaume Montserrat, who’s passionate with nature, society and traveling. He draws trying to bend those three worlds.

Jaume found inspiration for his project ‘Emptyland’, when flying home from South America to Spain. He fell asleep and imagined waking up on an island where he lives for 29 days with other animals.

He explains: “On this island, there was only one animal from each specimen (kind of like Noah’s Ark). All of them were empty, asexual and immortal. They didn’t need to hunt, nor were they scared of being hunted – so there was a perfect symbiosis.”

He and the wildlife lived free from worries in this dream, and that empty paradise is what sparked these images.

Incredible scroll drawings created inside a moving car by Carl Krull

carlkrull-01 carlkrull-02 carlkrull-03 carlkrull-04 carlkrull-05 carlkrull-06

A series of incredible scroll drawings by Danish artist Carl Krull. The obsessiveness of the line work is impressive, but what’s more impressive is that these were drawn, line by line in the passenger seat of a car, during a road trip across the United States. Every bump in the road was incorporated into the drawings.

Tim Jeffs has created these wonderfully detailed animal portraits using just pen and ink. Tim’s son, Harrison, was so impressed with his dad’s work that he shared some of his drawings on reddit. After reading some very positive feedback, he opened an Etsy shop to sell some of his dad’s illustrations.
