Walking Shadows by Jason Ratliff

Jason Ratliff uses the outline and shadow of objects to great effect in his series ‘Walking Shadows’. He is removing much unnecessary detail to bring emphasis to the shape of certain objects, while retaining detail where he wants to show the whole story. For ‘Walking Shadows’ he creates his simplified shapes with detailed patterns, as with the rainbow-like collages.

TED Talk: John Hockenberry – We are all designers

John Hockenberry has a special presenting style. Nevertheless he’s really worth listening to, when he talks about intent! At the end of his talk, he got to me. Then I cried a little.

John Hockenberry is a journalist. He tells a personal story inspired by a pair of flashy wheels in a wheelchair-parts catalogue – and how they showed him the value of designing a life of intent.

Illuminated Landscapes by Benoit Paillé

Montreal-based photographer Benoit Paillé has been working on a fascinating series of landscapes using a bizarre lighting method involving a suspended glowing square. The images above are not photoshopped, the 1×1 meter light is instead hung in the center of each photograph and the resulting image shows the unique form of illumination that creeps into the surrounding area. Paillé says his goal is to redefine what a landscape photograph is by questioning its reality, creating a kind of poetic moment in space and time. You can see many more of his Alternative Landscapes on Flickr.
